Q: What is the period of existence for academic promotion?
A: Associate Professor & Professor Grade VK7: 3 years, Professor Grade VK6 & VK5: 4 years
Q: How can I check the status of my promotion application?
A: SAPT (Amended 2016): UMPortal: Staff E-Services > Service > Academic Promotion. If the application status is ‘At the BSM level”, you may send email to kp_akademik@um.edu.my for further inqueries.

FAQ
Q: What is promotion?
A: Promotion means substantive upgrading from one grade to a higher grade within the same service and scheme of service with the approval of the Promotion Board.
Q: When will and officer be eligible for a promotion?
A: An officer will only be eligible for a promotion if he/she has fulfilled all the requirements for promotion specified in his/her scheme of service and if there is a vacancy for the promotion unless the scheme of service provides otherwise.
Q: How do I apply for a promotion?
A: Applications can be made online via https://portal.um.edu.my/
Q: What promotion positions can I apply?
A: Applications can be made based on the same service scheme and to a higher post grade.
Q: Is an officer who has been subjected to disciplinary punishment eligible for acting for a promotion?
A: An officer who has been subjected to disciplinary punishment will not be eligible for acting for a specific period. The ineligibility period depends on the type of punishment. (Refer to Article 12, Guidelines on the Management of Acting and Promotion in Civil Service, Service Circular Number 7, Year 2010).
Q: Can an officer who is under investigation be considered for a promotion?
A: Yes. An officer who is under disciplinary action or MACC investigation may be considered for acting/promotion and his/her status shall be notified to the Promotion Board. However, the officer’s promotion is subject to the officer being free from any disciplinary action.

SLAB/SLAI:
SLAB/SLAI is a scholarship program created by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to increase the number of qualified academic staff with a Doctorate Degree (PhD). Through this scheme, Public Universities, particularly Universiti Malaya, identify qualified candidates to be offered Fellowships to pursue studies at PhD level or equivalent to meet the needs of teaching staff according to niche area.
